What it's about
Felix is a scout in an endless war against giant insect-like aliens on a planet called Banshee. He fights inside a powered suit of armour, and survives by letting a cold, detached part of himself take over in combat. A second storyline follows people on a remote station who come across the recordings from his suit and slowly piece together who he was.

What I liked
- The battle scenes are fast, frightening and easy to follow.
- Felix's way of coping says something real about trauma and endurance.
- The two storylines come together well at the end.
What I didn't like
- The switch to the second storyline is abrupt and takes a while to pay off.
- The middle section drags compared with the opening.
Should you read it?
Yes, if you like military sci-fi with more on its mind than action. Push through the slow patch in the middle — the last third is worth it.
